What is Iodine Deficiency?Iodine is an element that is needed for your thyroid to produce a hormone that regulates your metabolism. Because the body does not make iodine, its important that you have it in your diet. Without correct iodine levels in your diet you can become iodine deficient which can lead to a range of symptoms and health issues. What Causes Iodine Deficiency? Is caused by not having enough iodine in your diet. Iodine occurs naturally in soil and seawater. Traditionally people have maintained iodine levels from iodized table salt, Breads, cheeses, cow's milk, eggs, seafood, greens, raw sunflower seeds, frozen yogurt, ice cream, iodine containing multivitamins, iodized table salt, saltwater fish, seaweed (including kelp, dulce, nori), Shellfish, Soy milk, Soy Sauce, Yoghurt. Not all food packaging highlights the level of iodine intake you receive so it is sometimes hard to gage if you are getting enough iodine in your diet What are symptoms of Iodine Deficiency? All of the effects of iodine deficiency can be related back to effects on thyroid hormone production.Goiter - without enough iodine the thyroid slowly enlarges (goiter) in an effort to keep up with your demand for thyroid hormone production, the thyroid gland can develop nodules and symptoms like choking, difficulty swallowing and breathing can result from the enlarged gland.. Hypothyroidism - is the result of an under active thyroid gland. Hhypothyroidism - is the result of an under active thyroid gland. This can result from a number of causes, including iodine deficiency. How can I correct Iodine Deficiency?Taking an iodine supplementation or increasing the amount of iodine rich foods in your diet can boost your iodine levels (which are needed to produce the thyroid hormone). What is Nascent Iodine? |
